Being a billionaire can be hard. When you are that far removed from reality, your body doesn’t always produce the happy chemicals the rest of us get for doing ordinary things.
Dopamine is released into the brain when we are anticipating a reward. Without it, our ancestors might not have had the desire to hunt for food or gather fruit. The modern day equivalent, at least for the richest 1%, seems to be hoarding money, and the wealthiest of the wealthy achieve a boost of extra dopamine when they make the Forbes list of Billionaires, or one of the other dozens of lists of the richest or most powerful people in the world. The problem is, hoarding that much requires throwing a lot of folks under the bus, because that amount of money is not a natural amount of compensation for anyone, in the same way that eating a thousand times more than one’s body needs is both unhealthy, and takes away the opportunity for 999 other people to eat.
So I made list of 7 alternate ways that billionaires can increase their dopamine levels. I’ll list them in second person just in case any billionaires are reading:
-Run a marathon, half marathon, or 5 k
-Donate to kickstarters- enough so that they achieve their goal
-Open a subsidized (by you) low income housing complex and give yourself a gold star sticker for every resident who moves in from off the streets
-End a labor strike by giving the strikers what they are asking for, and maybe a little more. It might seem like this puts you on the losing side at first, so think of it instead as switching teams.
-Pay off the student loans of some doctors, nurses, social workers, teachers, artists, or anyone else who is making the world a better place.
-Get a step counter and do some walking.
-Be Batman: Use your wealth to strike fear in the hearts of criminals. (And by criminals, I mean other billionaires).
